Electromagnetic Flow Meters Enable High Accuracy in Industrial Applications - Focus on Microfluidic Control Technology

Industrial applications from refineries to vending machines require precise temperature, pressure, and flow measurements to control complex and simple processes. For example, in the food industry, precise control of the product bottling and canning flow rate directly affects profits, and therefore it is necessary to reduce the flow measurement error. This article provides an overview of the flowmeter technology, focusing on the electromagnetic flowmeter, one of the most accurate in liquid flow measurement.
      A variety of different techniques are used to measure flow rates, including differential pressure, Coriolis force, ultrasound, and electromagnetics. The most common are differential pressure flow meters, but they are more sensitive to pressure changes in the system. Coriolis meters have **accuracy (up to 0.1%), but they are bulky and expensive. Ultrasonic flowmeters are usually smaller, less expensive, but have limited accuracy (typically 0.5%). Ultrasonic flowmeters use noninvasive measurement technology to improve reliability while reducing the impact of time-varying detection elements, but cannot be used for dirty or contaminated fluids.
Electromagnetic flowmeters also provide non-invasive detection. These devices can be used for acidic, basic and ionic liquids - these liquids have a conductivity range from 10 S/m to 10–6 S/m and can be clean, dirty, corrosive, aggressive or viscous liquids or slurries , but not for hydrocarbon or gas flow measurements. They can provide relatively high system accuracy (0.2%) for low flow rates and high flow rates down to about 0.125 inches in diameter and 10 cubic feet in capacity, and can maintain repeatable readings even at lower flow rates.
