Electromagnetic flowmeter in the analysis of the advantages of pump protection

Operating the pump in a dry state can damage components or create cavitation in the centrifugal pump. Replacement parts can add up to thousands of dollars. These costs do not include downtime of pump operation or downtime that affects production or operation.

Technology for pump protection

There are many techniques that can perform pump protection. Flow meters can be used, but continuous flow measurements are not always required and are typically more expensive than switching. Mechanical flow switches use mechanical operation to activate the relay; however, over time, moving parts may wear out and increase maintenance, and if viscous liquids or build up, the reliability of the switch may be adversely affected.

Tuning forks and ultrasonic flow meters are some of the other techniques used for pump protection. The fork or gap inherent in the technology must be wet or dry to be detected. As a result, they are unable to detect a decrease in flow and the opening creates space for possible blockages.

Why choose an electromagnetic flowmeter?

Electromagnetic flow meters are ideally suited for pump protection applications. Electromagnetic flowmeters use a similar principle to thermal mass flowmeters. The fluid carries heat away from the probe tip, reducing the temperature difference between the RTD and the reference RTD. As the temperature difference rises or falls due to heat transfer, the set value is reached and the relay is de-energized. The manufacturer will be in the alarm state at the setpoint reference switch.

How the relays are wired (NC-CO or NO-CO) depends on the needs of the application. Both high and low flow rates can be detected by thermal diffusion switches.

 With heat dissipation, users get the most powerful features and flexibility. The advantages of this technology include:

No moving parts, less maintenance required;

Many probe types are suitable for water or more viscous liquids;

Installed on a horizontal or vertical line to remove the top dead center that needs to be installed;

Optional remote mounting of electronic components;

Hotspot options available

Contrary to the main pipe, low flow detection;

The current output of the trend and fault indication;

Temperature compensation reduces setpoint drift at varying operating temperatures.
